Tribute to Terry Sutton MBE (1929-2024)

The Chairman of Dover District Council, Cllr Gordon Cowan, has expressed condolences on behalf of the district following the sad news of the death of Terry Sutton MBE who passed away aged 94 on 3 February 2024.

Terry Sutton was one of Dover’s most respected citizens, fondly known as “Mr Dover” for his encyclopaedic knowledge of the town, its history, and its comings and goings.

Born in Dover in 1929, Terry spent 45 years as a reporter and editor on the Dover Express. When he eventually retired in 1994, he continued to write for local newspapers and was a prominent figure in the town as a founding member of the Dover Society, and an Honorary Freeman of the town.

Cllr Cowan said: "Generations of councillors and officers, long before the creation of DDC in 1974 were on the receiving end of Terry’s inquisitive and probing questions! He had a passion for news which kept us on our toes, but at the heart of it was his love of Dover, his life-long home town.

“He was a real gentleman who took the greatest interest in seeing Dover advance, whilst also keeping one eye on the past. He’d also be the first to question those of us in authority!

“There was rarely an event in Dover where Terry wasn’t there. Dover has lost one of its greatest ambassadors and he will be sadly missed.”
