Your rent card

At the beginning of your tenancy you will be given a rent card. This gives you details of:

  • Rent.
  • Service Charges that are eligible for Housing Benefit.
  • Services Charges that are not eligible for benefits (heating and hot water).

The 'amount due' is the amount you will pay each week.

Housing Benefit will not show on your rent card. When it has been assessed, you can send your rent card in to the Rent Section to be amended. A new rent card is issued before the beginning of April each year giving details of the change in rent and service charges. Before this you will receive a letter giving you four weeks notice of any increase.

All payments are entered on your rent card. If for any reason you do not have a rent card, rent payments can be made in any cash office, and you will be issued with a temporary receipt. The payment is credited to your rent account in the same way. Please keep this receipt as proof of payment. The temporary receipt can be handed in next time you pay when the cashier will make a manual entry on your rent card. The machines used by the cashiers show an up-to-date balance on your rent card. This will show if there is any change to your weekly rent (usually because of a change in Housing Benefit) and the rent card will then be kept by the cashier, who will send it to the Rent Section for amendment.
