Sandwich Corridor Scheme

The construction of an East Kent Access road is an integral part of the Sandwich Corridor scheme.

The Sandwich Corridor area lies between Ramsgate in the north and Sandwich in the south, straddling the boundary of Dover District and Thanet District Councils. It serves as the main gateway between the two areas and the current road infrastructure is unable to handle the large volumes of traffic, particularly the movements at peak hours.

The master plan for the scheme will see the insertion of a dual carriageway and the widening of other sections of the highway infrastructure, on a phased basis to meet current needs and secure future investment in the corridor.

Additional objectives of the Sandwich Corridor Scheme include:

  • projects to upgrade the local environment to support existing businesses, improve the appearance of the area, and provide opportunities for new investment, and
  • the development of individual sites to meet the infrastructure needs of the area. The master plan proposes new dwellings to be constructed on the Sandwich Industrial Estate, accompanied by industrial redevelopment and a hotel, to be implemented on a phased basis.

A planning application for 19.5ha of housing (303 dwellings) has been approved by the council.
