Music Licence
The Government has amended the Copyright,
Design and Patents Act 1988 on 1st January 2011 and has
removed the current exemption enjoyed by charities and non-profit
organisations from the requirement to obtain a music licence from
the PPL (Phonographic Performance Limited) for the playing of
copyright music to the public.
The law changed on January 1st 2011 but PPL is
giving a grace period of one year for charities to allow them time
to adjust to the new arrangements.
PPL and PRS for Music are developing a pilot
joint licensing scheme for community buildings after detailed
discussions and negotiations with charities and their
representative organisations.
