Useful Information from the Forum Meetings

Flooding: Be Prepared

  • Flooding is a concern to residents in the district, particularly in the Deal and Sandwich areas, and we have responded by holding Forum meetings to discuss this issue.
  • We have all seen the devastating effect that flooding can have - that's why it always pays to be prepared.
  • To find out if you are at risk, please see the Environment Agency website or call the Floodline on 0845 988 1188.
  • Sign up for Floodline Warnings Direct, a free service from the Environment Agency giving warnings direct by phone, mobile, email, SMS text message, fax or pager.
  • Even if you don't live in a flood risk area, flash flooding can happen with very heavy rainfall and / or problems with water mains or sewers. So what action can you take?
  • Keep some plywood, sandbags or metal sheeting in the house to cover doors, windows and airbricks.
  • It's a good idea to know where to turn off your gas, electricity and water supplies at the mains and to keep a list of useful numbers to hand including Floodline, the Council, emergency services and your insurance company.
  • Other sensible precautions include ensuring that treasured items, such as family photos albums that cannot be replaced, and important personal documents like birth and wedding certificates and passports, are kept upstairs away from floodwater.

Planning for Non-Planners

  • Planning Aid England: Engaging communities in planning
  • Planning Aid England provides free, independent and professional planning advice to communities and individuals who cannot afford to pay professional fees.
