What is a Community Strategy?

The Community Strategy is what it says it is – a plan for the community. The strategy focuses on the needs and issues facing the communities in the Dover District and identifies the vision and priorities to improve economic, social and environmental well-being of the area and improve the quality of life for everyone.

The big issues for the District cannot be solved by any one agency; therefore partnership working is the most important element of the Strategy. This will enable us to move forward and provide a means of tackling issues together.

Community strategies can:

• Be powerful for engaging local communities to discuss their needs and ideas;
• Provide direction for joining the work of local partners;
• Provide the potential to secure greater efficiency and effectiveness in the use of public, private and voluntary resources;
• Provide an opportunity to share and learn from everyone's experiences.

In short, community strategies are a practical tool for 'joining things' locally.

 

Community Strategy Review 2008

Dover District Council, working with statutory partners, has a responsibility to draw up a sustainable community strategy and keep it under review.

Following extensive consultation, our Community Strategy was published in 2003. Five years on, it needs to be reviewed to ensure we tackle economic, social and environmental concerns in a balanced and sustainable way. As part of an East Kent Local Strategic Partnership, we also need to consider the wider East Kent area.

The East Kent Local Strategic Partnership is responsible for developing an East Kent Sustainable Community Strategy, identifying common issues and priorities and clearly supporting the Vision for Kent (Kent County Council’s Sustainable Community Strategy).

As the East Kent Sustainable Community Strategy represents a shared vision, it will be developed from the views of local people and organisations. Community consultation is pivotal to ensure its success and we will undertake wide consultation to give local people, groups and organisations a say in telling us what you think about some of the biggest issues facing the area.

During the review period we will:

• Listen to local people about the issues that most concern them.
• Find out how local people view their District and how they want to see it improve.
  Engaging and involving local people is an on-going process and will continue after this review period is finished.

At a county level, there is a Local Area Agreement between Kent County Council and central Government. The Kent Agreement 2 sets targets for the whole of Kent and is linked to the issues and priorities laid out on the Vision for Kent.
