Youth Opportunities Fund 2006-2008

What?

  • A government fund which, combined with the Youth Capital Fund will …
    • ‘Give a voice and influence to young people … to improve things to do and places to go’
  • Grants can be used to pay for equipment, materials, activities, transport, staff and instructors, training or anything which helps to provide a positive experience for young people. This includes opportunities for them to play sport, enjoy artistic and cultural activities, go on trips or simply enjoy free time in their own communities.

Why?

  • In 2005 the government published ‘Youth Matters’ explaining its intentions for youth provision.
  • It committed £115m nationally for:
    • 'things for young people to do and places for young people to go’.
    • giving young people a voice ….
    • empowering young people to give them more choice and influence over provision and facilities in their area’

When?

  • Funds will be available from August 2006 to March 2008.
  • Young People’s Panels will meet quarterly to make decisions.
  • Closing dates for applications:
    • 2006 - 1st September, 1st December
    • 2007 - 2nd February, 13th April, 31st August, 30th November
    • 2008 - 26th January

Who?

  • The fund is for Young people ages 13 – 19
    (up to 25 for young people with learning difficulties).
  • Any not-for-profit organisation making provision for young people may apply.
  • Applications are also welcome from groups of young people themselves, although grants to individuals are not permitted.
  • Young people must be involved in the application process

How much?

  • You can apply for grants for £250 to £5,000. There is no requirement for ‘partnership funding’ although, if you have raised funds yourselves or from elsewhere. this will be viewed favourably
  • Each district Young People’s Panel will have at least £40,000 per year to spend.
