What are conservation areas?
They can be defined as:
- ‘Areas of special architectural or historic interest, the
character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or
enhance.’

Is my building/land within a conservation area?
This information can be found on the DDC website interactive maps.
Is conservation area consent required to erect an
extension/garage/shed etc. on my land?
No, but you may need planning permission, the Duty Planner is
available Monday to Friday, from 10am-1pm on 01304 872042.
My house is not a listed building but is in a conservation
area, do I need consent to change my windows?
No, unless: it is a commercial property, flats, or if the
property is within the Deal Middle Street or Sandwich Walled Town
Conservation Areas, where additional controls apply and planning
permission may be necessary.
My house is not listed but it in a conservation area, is any
consent required to change my roof covering?
No, unless: it is a commercial property, flats, or if the
property is within the Deal Middle Street or Sandwich Walled Town
Conservation Areas, where additional controls apply and planning
permission may be necessary.
Note: Approval under Building Regulations may be required.
My house is not listed but is within a conservation area, do I
need consent to put a satellite dish on the building?
Planning permission is required if the dish is to be sited on a
chimney stack, wall or roof slope which faces onto, and is visible
from a highway.
When is conservation area consent required?
For the complete or substantial demolition of buildings and
structures, including walls and outhouses.
Are trees within a conservation area protected?
Yes, any tree with a stem diameter of 75mm or above, at 1.5
metres above ground level is protected; you must give the District
Council six weeks notice in writing of works to, or removal of a
tree(s) in a conservation area. Unauthorised works can result in a
substantial fine.
