| Councillor Paul
Watkins was first elected as Leader of the Council in May 2003 and
re-elected for a further term in May 2007, and again in May 2011.
Councillor Watkins represents the Ward of St
Margaret’s-at-Cliffe.
Career:
Paul Watkins
has been in local politics at all levels since 1983. During
this time he has been Leader and Chairman of the Dover District
Council, a Kent County Councillor, and was the Conservative Party
Parliamentary Candidate for Dover at the 2001 and 2005 general
elections.
Paul is currently
Chairman of the South East Strategic Partnership for Migration,
Secretary to the South East England Councils and Board &
Executive Member of the South East Local Enterprise
Partnership.
Additional roles include
being the joint Chairman of the Kent Health Commission and Chairman
of the Dover Local Health and Well-being Board. Paul also
serves as a Board Member for the East Kent Spatial Development
Company, has been appointed to the Sandwich Economic Development
Task Force and is Transport Representative on the Local Enterprise
Board’s Coastal Community Group.
Paul is a former Chairman
of the now disbanded South East Kent Community Health Council and a
former Chairman of the South East Region of the Southern Housing
Group, as well as serving as a former Group Board Member.
Apart from the political
arena, Paul has held a range of Governorships within education
including Primary and Secondary schools and Further Education, and
was formally a member of the Court of the University of Kent.
As well as being current
Leader of the Dover District Council, Paul is a former Registered
Nurse and self-employed businessman with retail property
interests.
Family:
Paul Watkins is married and has two
daughters.
Interests:
A keen supporter of the Kent County Cricket
Club, Paul is also a member of the Deal Society, as well as the
Association of Men of Kent and Kentish Men.
