Parish Poll
Frequently Asked Questions
When will the Notice of Poll be published?
The Notice of Poll will be published no later than five days
before the polling day and will state:
- the date, time and place of the poll;
- who can vote;
- the question to be asked; and
- the details of the proposer of the question.
When is the poll being held?
The poll will be held on Wednesday 23 March 2011.
Will I get a poll card to remind me to vote?
No. The law does not permit Poll Cards for a Parish Poll.
I don’t know where my polling station is located?
There are 11 polling stations in the Dover Town Council
electoral area. Electors must attend their usual polling station. A
full list of the polling stations is available on the Notice of
Poll.
Who can vote?
In order to vote you must be 18 or older, be on the electoral
register for the Dover Town Council area and qualify to vote for
local government elections. If you are unsure if you are registered
to vote please contact Dover District Council’s Elections Section
on 01304 872344.
Is it too late to register to vote if I am not yet on the
electoral register for Dover?
Yes. To be eligible to vote in the parish poll you must have
registered as a voter in the Dover Town Council electoral area
prior to 1 March 2011.
Can I vote if I am registered to vote outside the Dover Town
Council electoral area?
No. The poll only applies to voters in the parish which has
called it, which in this case is Dover Town Council. If you are
registered to vote in a neighbouring parish such as River,
Whitfield or Guston, you will therefore not be eligible to vote in
the poll.
How can I vote?
You can vote in person by visiting the appropriate polling
station.
Can someone vote as a proxy on my behalf?
No. The Rules governing parish polls make no provision for proxy
votes.
Can I vote by post?
No. The Rules governing parish polls make no provision for
postal votes. This means that even if you are normally registered
to vote by postal vote you would still need to vote in person at
the Polling Station.
What do I do if I am blind or otherwise unable to read the
ballot paper?
There is provision under the Rules for assistance to be provided
on the grounds of blindness or other inability to read the ballot
paper. The staff at the Polling Station will assist you.
What time can I vote on polling day?
You can vote at a Polling Station between the hours of 4.00 pm
and 9.00 pm.
When will the votes be counted?
The poll will be counted on the night of Wednesday 23 March
2011. It is expected that a result will be announced late on 23
March 2011, depending on the level of turnout.
How will I find out the result?
The result will be made available on our
website and notices placed at the Council Office,
Whitfield. A notice will also be provided to Dover Town
Council.
Who pays for the cost of holding the parish poll?
The cost of the poll is met by Dover Town Council. Although
Dover District Council is responsible for organising and running
the poll once it has been called, the cost of the parish poll must
be met by the council that called it – in this case Dover Town
Council.
