Equality and Access to services

Equality Framework for Local Government logo

We are committed to ensuring equality in everything that we do both through our service provision and through our responsibilities as an employer. We recognise that while everyone is different, they have the right to be treated with an equal level of respect and have equal access to our services and facilities.

These pages give an overview of our work to support Equality.

The Equality Act 2010

The Equality Act 2010 brought in new requirements and duties for public bodies. At DDC we are working with the community and our partners to develop objectives which are both meaningful and relevant to our District and we will be publishing details of these by the end of March 2012.

  • Equality Report January 2012 - Information about the work we are doing with people who share characteristics protected by the Equality Act.
  • Our Equality policy has been sent to Cabinet for approval and will be published here soon.

Equality Objectives

We are working with partners, our services, staff groups and union representatives to develop ideas for corporate equality objectives. Suggestions being discussed are:-

  • Developing a clearer understanding of the ageing population and joining our services with other agencies to support them better.
  • Maintaining our position as one of Kent’s top 5 safest communities
  • Supporting community forums
  • Supporting integration through partnership working
  • Staff awareness of the Equality Duty and their responsibilities
  • Apprenticeships to support people into employment.
  • Developing through partnership working, a disabled / elderly person transport scheme

Objectives will go to Cabinet for approval on April 16th and will be published here following their approval.

Equality work in previous years

Prior to the Equality Act 2010 we had an Equality Schemes and action plans:

The Equality scheme and action plan showed how we planned to work with and provide services for the diverse communities our district.
