Coast Protection - Future Plans
Deal to Kingsdown Frontage
Coastal Strategy
The plan includes an Action Plan to deliver the key proposals
with both the Council and the Environment Agency having
responsibility to undertake individual schemes:
Beach Monitoring
The Council has been working in recent years to improve the
quality of date on the processes, which affect the coastal
defences. A monitoring station has been installed on Deal Pier to
measure tide, wind and wave and keep detailed records. This is due
to be replaced shortly with a new improved facility when it is
hoped to provide an internet link to this gauge. Regular beach
surveys are being undertaken to improve information on the movement
of beach material. This work is now being undertaken as part of the
regional Strategic Monitoring work being managed by the South East
Coastal Group of which the Council is a member. Further details are
available on the Channelcoast website.
Beach Management
After the scour protection, storm damage reconstruction and
beach nourishment work carried out early in 2004 beach levels are
being monitored with further recycling of shingle planned for the
following years. The Strategy supports the need for continued
renourishment of beaches both by means of imported material and by
recycling material from Walmer to Kingsdown. Further recycling work
will be undertaken during 2011/12 and 2013/14.
In 2010 Dover District Council were approved funding to carry
out a Project Appraisal Report (PAR) through the Medium Term
Plan (MTP). This report will outline the future needs of
Beach Management to Kingsdown, Deal and replace the five year Beach
Management Plan. Currently the PAR has identified the
replacement of the fourteen timber beach groynes and large
scale beach recharge. The PAR is looking to be completed by
March 2012.
MOD Rifle Range
In 2004 a study was undertaken intothe feasibility of realigning
the defences at the former MOD site, which continue to deteriorate.
The strategy has supported the need to realign the defences and
subject to the availability of funding this proposal will be
advanced in the coming years.
In 2010 the Environment Agency approved further funding in
conjunction with the above for a Contamination Study to be carried
out. The appropriate consultant has now carried out this work
and produced a report to show the results. Further
comments and future plans are yet to be confirmed by Dover District
Council.
Deal Secondary sea defences
It is recognised within the strategy that there is a need to
consider constructing a secondary sea wall to the south of the
Royal Hotel in deal. This wall would reduce the risk of flooding at
times of severe storms, which has caused damage in the central part
of Deal in previous years. The design of this wall will need to
respond to the need to maintain beach and promenade access and to
not detract from the appearance of the seafront. It is planned that
design work on this will commence in 2009.
The above scheme has been currently included in the Medium Term
Plan by the Environment Agency with approved funding. Working
collectively with Dover District Council the key stakeholders are
in the process of discussing the design of the wall. A
planning application is scheduled to be submitted in the near
future with a predicted start date of September 2012.
