Coast Protection

Implementing Policy

The Council's own management policy has been developed in accordance with the SMP through Coastal Strategy Plans for each Management Unit.

Dover District Council is responsible as an operating authority for a 20 kilometre section of coastline in East Kent which extends from Sandown Castle, north of Deal to Kingsdown and includes St. Margaret's Bay.

The Council has recently developed a Coastal Strategy Plan for the Pegwell Bay to Kingsdown Management Unit in partnership with the Environment Agency, which will establish policy for the coming 5 years. Public consultation on the proposals was undertaken during the summer of 2007 and the final strategy will be adopted by the Council early in 2008.

The remaining sections of coastline within the District are the direct responsibility of private landowners such as Railtrack, National Trust and Sandwich Bay Estates.
