Council Tax Discount Disregards

The full Council Tax bill assumes that there are two or more adults (i.e. people aged 18 or over) living in a dwelling.

Certain people will not be counted when looking at the number of resident adults if they meet the required conditions. These people are known as 'disregarded for discount purposes'.

The person responsible for paying the Council Tax bill can make a claim. The types of people who may be disregarded for discount purposes are listed below. If all but one of the adults living in the property fulfil the criteria, the discount will be applicable.

If all but one of the adults are disregarded a 25% discount can be given.

If all the residents are disregarded the discount will be 50%.

The discount continues for as long as the qualifying criteria is met. The Council must be informed within 21 days of any change which may affect the discount. Failure to notify may lead to the imposition of a fine. The Council will also write to the responsible person each year to check if the circumstances are the same.

Please print out the required form, complete it and return it to the council Tax Section.
