Introducing the Democratic Services Division

Scope of Service

The Democratic Services Division provides capacity at the heart of the organisation to support elected members of the council and the Council's Management Team, to administer decision-making arrangements and to provide services directly to the public through local authority searches, licensing and elections.

The Democratic Services Division comprises of three main sections:

Democratic Support Electoral Services & Land Charges Licensing

Members of this section arrange and support official meetings of the Council, including the compilation of agendas, provision of advice on procedural matters at meetings and the preparation of minutes. This is undertaken in accordance with the Council's constitution and relevant statutory deadlines.

The section provides support, training and development for Members of the Council, co-ordinates reviews by the Council's Scrutiny Committees, hosts events for young people and supports communication and consultation with Town and Parish Councils.

Members of this section maintain the Register of Electors, organise local council and parliamentary elections and assist with boundary reviews.

They also undertake all local land searches as part of the house buying process for solicitors, licensed conveyancers and house purchasers.

Members of this section fulfill a range of licensing and enforcement functions in respect of hackney carriages and private hire vehicles, animal establishments, regulated entertainment, alcohol sales and street trading.
