A special award for clean recycling has been made to Dover District Council - and the Council is thanking householders across the district who have been sorting and recycling their paper and helping to make the news.
The Council received a certificate from Aylesford Newsprint Ltd for the quality of the newspapers and magazines delivered to them for recycling. This is an important award as it shows that householders are playing their part by putting out clean newspapers, magazines, junk mail, brochures, catalogues etc for recycling. The quality of paper means that Aylesford Newsprint Ltd can use the recycled paper from the district to make new newspapers.
The Council would like to thank both residents and cleaning staff for helping to improve the level of litter in the district. A recent survey, where a sample of streets is inspected and the level of litter recorded shows that 92% of our streets are free from litter.
Work continues and we are focusing on improving the cleaning further and we ask that you continue to help us by using litterbins, not putting your waste out before the night before your collection day, and reporting any problem areas to us so we can get them cleaned. Any problems relating to litter, rubbish or recycling can be reported on (01304) 872428 or waste@dover.gov.uk.
Householders across the area are being thanked after recycling figures continue to grow. Recycling exceeded Government targets over the last financial year and were at 19% for the year ended March 2007. And over the first three months of this financial year figures have hit an all time high of 22%.
This follows news that DDC has introduced a new collection vehicle and has the capacity to provide a kerbside collection service to every household in the district. We thank everyone and the message is to keep recycling.
The Council regrets that it is stopping the Saturday Bulk Collection service from 1 September 2007.
This follows changes in the law, which mean that we can no longer collect electrical items with other waste. These items now need to be collected separately and recycled. The impact of this new law would require us to provide another vehicle at the collection points and the cost of this is felt to be too high. Residents can take waste to one of the three Household Waste and Recycling Centres or the Council will collect bulky items at a small charge, please call 01304 872428. Electrical items should not be put out with the normal refuse collection because the law prevents us taking them. Residents are reminded that any waste left at the collection points is classed as fly tipping and the Council may take enforcement action.
