A breath of fresh air means Dover District Council is working to cut its carbon footprint - the Council is one of the first Authorities in the country to have its own stand-alone wind turbine on its premises.
The 17 metre turbine was installed at our Whitfield offices in November.
It is estimated the turbine, which is helping to power the offices, could save more than £4,000 on annual energy bills at current energy prices. During the first two weeks, it saved around 1/2 tonne of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere, helping work to reduce adverse climate change.
DDC worked with the Kent Energy Centre to secure green funds to support the installation, including £30,000 from the Energy Saving Trust from the Government’s Low Carbon Building Programme.
The project has also been partly funded by EDF Energy, which granted £30,000 towards the scheme from its Green Fund, and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) provided a further £27,000.
By taking a few simple measures you can cut carbon dioxide emissions and save money, as illustrated in the table from the Energy Saving Trust below:
| Behavioural Measures | Net saving per Measure (kWh/per home/per year) |
Average kgs CO2 saved per home p.a. |
Average £ saving for a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turning Heating down 1 Deg C | 1364.33 | 324.82 | 38.91 |
| Switching off lights when not needed etc. | 69.95 | 37.07 | 5.77 |
| Turning appliances off & avoiding “Standby” | 332.00 | 112.33 | 28.52 |
| Boiling only the required amount of water | 50.88 | 26.81 | 5.09 |
| Washing clothes at 30 DegC | 81.74 | 43.08 | 8.17 |
