Changing face of our coastline

Coastline at St Margarets

Our coastline is undergoing constant change, from the natural processes of waves and tides, to rising sea levels and climate change, from coastal defences to a range of social, economic and environmental factors.

The South East Coastal Group, a partnership of agencies and authorities including Dover District Council, has developed a Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) covering the coastline from the Isle of Grain to South Foreland. This includes most of the district’s coastline extending from the Sandwich Bay Estate to South Foreland, including St Margaret’s Bay, Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown.

The document outlines what we should do in planning coastal defences in the future and is available for public comment until 7 September this year. Following consultation, all responses will be assessed and the final version of the plan will be presented to each Local Authority for adoption.

For more information on the Shoreline Management Plan and what it means to people in Dover District, please visit the Council’s website www.dover.gov.uk Alternatively, pick up a leaflet in the library or at Council offices or email smp@canterbury.gov.uk or call DDC on (01304) 872420.
