A massive multi million pound redevelopment of the St James’ area in Dover Town Centre, which could bring more than 500 jobs to the area, has been given the go ahead by Dover District Council planners.
The £50 million makeover for the area, known as the Dover Town Investment Zone (DTIZ), was submitted by developer Bond City and food giant ASDA. The development includes a food store with additional shop and restaurant space, a 100 bedroom hotel, 53 affordable homes and a new 600 space car park. The site includes the vacant multi storey car park, the Stagecoach depot, Burlington House and the County Hotel, which will all need to be demolished. Following approval from the Government Office for the South East (GOSE) construction work could begin in mid 2008, subject to final agreements.
South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) has agreed a grant of £7.5m to assist DDC in the comprehensive development of the site. This will be used to help acquire key sites for the regeneration. DDC has committed in excess of £750,000 and agreed to contribute land. Other partners include KCC, and English Partnerships has expressed its intentions to invest in the redevelopment as well as the wider regeneration of Dover. Regeneration of the area continues to be taken forward under the Dover Pride Partnership.
