Drainage And Sewers

Definitions related to drainage

Drain  The first set of pipes taking water away from your property to your boundary. These then connect to other pipes - Private sewers, lateral drains or the public sewer. (This is the Householders responsibility)
Private Sewer

Carries water away from more than one property to meet the sewer. (Local Water Authorities responsibility from 1st October 2011)

Lateral Drain Carries water from a single property, outside the boundary of that property, until it meets a shared sewer - either a private sewer or the public sewer (Local Water Authorities responsibility from 1st October 2011)

Public Sewer

Takes water away for treatment through the sewer network. (Local Water Authorities responsibility)

The local water authority is Southern Water who can be contacted on 0845 278 0845

If your property was built after the 1st July 2011 then it is likely that your property was not included in the transfer of laterals and private sewers. If this is the case then you may be responsible / jointly responsible for the pipework up to the connection with the public sewer. The current information we have is that these properties will transfer their responsibility to the local water authority in 2012.
