Safer Food Better Business (SFBB)

In January 2006 new European Community Food Hygiene Regulations were introduced which superseded the previous Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations 1995. Under Article 5 of the new EC Regulation 852/2004 it stated that all Food Business Operators shall put in place, implement and maintain a permanent procedure or procedures based on the HACCP principles. In addition to this it also stated that Food Business Operators must establish documents and records commensurate with the nature and size of the food business to demonstrate the effectiveness of the systems and procedures in place. To assist Food Business Operators in achieving this the Food Standards Agency introduced the Safer Food Better Business Pack (SFBB). The Safer Food Better Business Pack (SFBB) is split into two main parts. The first part covers the 5 main areas of food safety, which are cooking, cleaning, chilling, cross-contamination and management. The second part includes a diary for the business to use on a daily basis.

From January 2006 the SFBB pack has been available for all food businesses. During the summer of 2006 a bid was submitted to the Food Standards Agency by Environmental Health Departments across Kent to obtain a grant to provide Safer Food Better Business seminars and coaching to food businesses across the county. Dover District Council was a part of the bid and as a result of monies being obtained there have been 6 seminars held within the Dover District and many follow up coaching visits to individual businesses. During the 6 seminars a total of 96 businesses from the district attended and 84 of those received a follow up coaching visit. As a follow up to this we have evaluated 36 of the businesses and have noted that the majority have been successful in the implementation of SFBB.

The seminars and follow up coaching sessions have now all been completed but we will continue to evaluate businesses during our routine work and provide advice and coaching where necessary. If you require an SFBB pack then these can be obtained by either contacting our department or via the Food Standards Agency. Full contact details for both are given below. We have the following types of packs available within the department: - SFBB for Caterers, SFBB for Retailers, SFBB for Chinese Cuisine with a fully translated version available and SFBB for Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan Cuisines. There is also a care homes supplement available, suitable for use at care homes and nurseries and additional diary pages for all business types. A DVD will be provided with your SFBB pack and this will give you instructions on how to use it. The following language options are available on the DVD – Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, English, Kurdish, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Tamil, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese and Welsh. If you still require any further advice or support on the use of the pack then we can provide one to one coaching sessions at the business and contact details are given at the bottom. Finally, if you have any queries relating to the SFBB pack then please do not hesitate to contact us and we will endeavour to assist you.
