Litter Control Area

As part of its ongoing commitment to clamping down on flytipping and littering, and as part of its work to make the district one in which we can all take pride, the Council has taken a major step to clear the roadway behind one of Dover's busy shopping areas.

Following a considerable period of consultation with local traders in the area, Dover District Council has declared its first Litter Control Area, with effect from 6 June 2005. The Order has been made for Edward Road, and covers the service area behind the shops in Biggin Street, including the un-adopted highway.

The Order means that those responsible for the land, which includes the shop leaseholders and freeholders, have a duty to keep it clear of litter and refuse, and the Council has the power to serve a Litter Abatement Notice if the area is not kept clear.

Cllr Nicholas Kenton, DDC Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "We are fully committed to working to make the district one in which we can all take pride. This area has suffered from fly tipping and rubbish accumulation for some time now, and we are confident that these new measures will improve the area significantly."
