Forward Planning

Forward Planning is responsible for developing planning policy and supporting economic development in the district

Photos of Dover, Deal and SandwichMain areas of work

Planning policy and economic development cover a wide range of issues. This is a summary of the main areas of our work:

  • Gathering information from other organisations, for example, the national Census and commercial property information.
  • Carrying out our own research on matters like housing needs, the demand for more shops, and the amount and quality of open space.
  • Using this information to identify the issues facing the district and the possible solutions.
  • Developing policy and action to address the issues.
  • Working with and influencing others such as the Regional Development Agency, Kent County Council and business support organisations.
  • Helping to implement some of the Council's major projects.
  • Providing planning advice for new and existing business.

Local Development Framework

Changes to the national planning system have led to the phasing out of Local Plans and their replacement by Local Development Frameworks (LDF). This is the major document produced by the section and is important for the District, as it sets the future pace, scale, pattern and quality of development. The Section is also responsible for producing the Statement of Community Involvement. This sets out how we can involve the community effectively in the development of our new LDF and in influencing planning applications. Together with the Community Strategy it is the main way in which the Council ensures development is sustainable; that is, it meets social, environmental and economic objectives and helps to create communities rather than just buildings.

Information on our timetable, progress and how you can get involved with the LDF is available on our Local Plan Review pages.
