Guide to Dover District Council for Schools

And where the money goes

Lady showing figures

Council spending is divided between capital and revenue. Capital spending is for one-off payments to buy things like buildings and vehicles, and to finance significant projects, such as new coastal protection works at Kingsdown, major works to Deal Pier, and regeneration projects in Aylesham and Dover. Other projects on which Dover District Council is spending capital include a pre-school building, fitness equipment at Dover and Deal leisure centres, and various housing projects. Capital spending also helps towards providing contributions and grant aid for community projects in towns and villages, and is often targeted at the more deprived areas of the District. Revenue spending is the way the Council pays for its services. Some examples in the current year are:

  • the collection of 39,346 tonnes of household waste from 47,144 households at a cost per resident of £20.50
  • cleaning the streets and public areas in the District
  • concessionary fares scheme
  • cemeteries
  • leisure services
  • museums, exhibitions and historical sites
  • planning and development
  • coastal protection
  • port health and medical services
  • Council tax benefits and Rent Allowances
  • highways and car parking

Further financial information

The Council budget is set in February of each year. More detailed information on Council finance is available from the Council offices on request.
