Why choose Sheltered Housing
Sheltered housing may appeal to you if you want to live
independently, in a usually smaller and easier-to-manage home but,
you like the idea of having someone to call on if there is an
emergency. The sheltered housing team actively work with tenants to
encourage a sense of community and support social events. A
Sheltered Housing Officer will also act as a facilitator to find
the support services that you may require.
Who is eligible?
Most schemes are open to people who are aged over 60. Couples
and single applicants may apply with support needs. An
assessment is carried out before homes are allocated; this enables
you to discuss any support needs that you may have. We try to make
sure they are in place before your arrival. This is essential to
finding appropriate accommodation.
Living in Sheltered Housing
When living in sheltered housing you have the same rights and
responsibilities (except the right to buy) as any other council
tenant. The aim of sheltered housing is to enable you to continue
living as independently as possible.
Support
Sheltered Housing
provides a quiet and friendly environment with the added
reassurance of a Sheltered Housing Officer offering security and
peace of mind. Within the accommodation there is an intercom
service which connects to an alarm response sevice. Tenants can
pull a cord within their accommodation and speak to an operator who
can provide the suitable help and support. The Sheltered Housing
Officer will support the service users of the scheme, to ensure
they can continue to live independently and play a full part in
their community. This includes liasing with relevant agencies when
needed and ensuring that necessary care, advice and specialist
support is provided. The sheltered team may also assist in
obtaining financial entitlements such as housing, council tax
benefit, attendance allowance, a support transfer applications and
other tenancy-related needs. Our aim is to support people without
intruding, maintaining independence
and privacy.
