Council Tax & Housing Benefit

Read this page

Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit are government schemes to help people on low income pay their rent and Council Tax. Dover District Council’s Business and Community Transformation Division administers Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit for people who live in the District of Dover. Please note if you need help with mortgage payments you will need to contact the Jobcentre Plus or The Pension Service, depending on your age. Links to their websites are given below:

Local Housing Allowance (LHA)

Local Housing Allowance (LHA) is a new way of working out and paying Housing Benefit for people who rent from a private landlord. It was introduced on 7th April 2008. With LHA, benefit will be based on the number of bedrooms you need and not how much the rent is. Full LHA details »

Electronic notifications

You can now receive notification of Housing/Council Tax Benefit electronically, rather than by post by using our 'Sign Me Up' service

If you choose to have this service, your notifications will be issued as a word attachment in an email sent to the email address provided by you. You will be helping the Council to work more efficiently and reduce expenditure on postage, envelopes and paper, whilst also easing your storage problems.

The 'Sign Me Up' service is also for Landlords.

National Leaflet Translation Project

Dover District Council is a partner in the National Leaflet Project. This contains leaflets offering general guidance and advice, in various languages, so that local authorities and customers can use them around the country.

Braille copies are available on request and an audio version of the leaflets is available on the website.

This website can be accessed by using the following link. www.benefit-leaflets.org
