The Fowlmead Sport Relief Mile
Sunday 21st March 2010
More than 400 participants gathered at Fowlmead Country Park to
complete the 1, 3 or 6 mile event at the 2010 Sainsbury’s Sport
Relief Mile. From tiny tots to great grandparents, everyone turned
out in force, many even going the extra mile, by wearing some
comical fancy dress outfits - from superheroes to fairies and even
a few on Space Hoppers!
The event organisers from the
Active Dover Partnership, including Fowlmead Country Park, Primary Care Trust,
Dover District Council, Dover District School Sport
Partnership, Vista
Leisure and Freedom
Leisure, were all there to co-ordinate proceedings, which
started with a dazzling display by the
Vista Twisters cheerleading squad to get everyone in the
mood.
Just before the high energy mass warm-up by the Vista Leisure
fitness instructors, local MP Gwyn Prosser said a few words of
encouragement and said: “Folwmead is a wonderful venue, and I’m
deligthed to see so many come together to show their support for
Sport Relief and do their bit by getting active! It’s great to know
that all the money raised will be helping vulnerable people living
incredibly tough lives both here in the UK and in the world’s
poorest countries.”
Participants then took to the tarmac and strutted their stuff to
be greeted on the finish line by Freedom Leisure staff with goody
bags and a medal. Refreshements were provided by Sports Leaders
from the Dover District School Sport Partnership who are raising
money for their trip to Zambia this summer. The 10 day tour is
organised in association with the Tag-Rugby Development Trust, a charity
that introduces the sport of rugby to primary aged children in
developing countries such as Africa. People wanting to know more
about the trip or would like to donate are invited to contact Pete
Norton at Castle Community School on 01304 373363.
