Sport & Leisure Strategies
Dover District Sport & Recreation
Strategy
Dover District Council, Sport England and Central Government
recognise the benefits that the provision of sport and recreational
facilities and opportunities bring to a community. These include
health and well-being, quality of life, social cohesion, raising
aspirations and pride in the area and regeneration.
As a result, the Council commissioned the ‘Dover District Sport
& Recreation Strategy’, which was completed in May 2008. The
strategy aims to work towards a number of key outcomes that
include; increasing access and opportunities, increasing
participation and ensuring that the Dover District has a range of
appropriately located quality leisure facilities to meet local
need.
The following two documents make up the strategy:
Dover District Parks and Open Spaces Strategy
The value of parks and open spaces has long been recognised for
promoting healthy living such as walking, cycling, informal
recreation social interaction, education, and supporting
biodiversity.
To ensure the parks and open spaces are managed effectively,
Dover District Council commissioned the ‘Dover District Parks &
Open Spaces Strategy’, which was completed in May 2008.
The strategy aims to focus on the requirements of local people,
ensure the value of capital investment can be maximised, and
implement improvements to local neighbourhoods.
Dover District Play Strategy
Central government are looking to support (through the Big
Lottery) projects that are self directed, creative, and fun, and
will facilitate the promotion of a long term positive change in
attitude locally, regarding the importance of children’s Play.
These play principles are relevant to the 'Every Child Matters
Framework' that local authorities are now working towards.
In September 2006, Dover District Council set up and facilitated
the Dover District Play Partnership. The Play Partnership is made
up of a variety of organisations and agencies involved in the Play
sector. It has been working to address issues of Play provision
across the District and produced a Play Strategy earlier this
year.
The purpose of the Dover District Play strategy is to reinforce
the importance of Play for children and young people and to
identify ways in which play opportunities and experiences can be
increased and enhanced across Dover District.
