Premises Licences
What is a Premises Licence?
A premises licence authorises the premises to be used for one or
more licensable activity:
a. Sale of alcohol by retail
b. Supply of alcohol in a members
club
c. Provision of regulated
entertainment
d. Provision of late night
refreshment.
There can only be one premises licence per location.
Where the licensable activity is the sale of alcohol by retail a
designated premises supervisor must be appointed.
There are a number of exemptions to
the need for a premises licence and these should be checked before
applying to make sure a licence is required.
Who can apply for a premises licence?
Anyone who proposes to carry on a business involving licensable
activities on the premises can apply for a premises
licence. Recognised clubs, charities, a proprietor of
educational establishments, health service bodies and a chief
officer of police may also apply for a premises licence.

Who can object?
Persons living or working in the vicinity, or a body
representing such persons (known as interested parties). Certain statutory
agencies (known as responsible
authorities) may also make representations.
