Dangerous Wild Animals
A dangerous wild animal is one that falls within the list
defined in section
7 of the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976.
It is an offence for anybody to keep a dangerous wild animal
unless the local authority licenses him or her to do so. Zoos
are exempt from this provision as they are covered by different
legislation.
An application to keep a dangerous wild animal must be made by
the person who owns and possesses the animal. Application
must be made to the local authority where the animal will normally
be kept, on the appropriate
form and must be accompanied by the relevant fee.
The local authority will require a vets
inspection to be carried out before any application is
granted.
The local authority cannot accept applications from any
person who is under the age of 18 years or who is disqualified from
keeping any dangerous wild animal.
