Education Services

Roman SoldierDover Museum provides an ideal location to study a wide range of national curriculum subjects. These include a variety of historical periods including Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Tudors, Victorians and W.W.2 but also other curriculum areas such as Art, Design and Technology, English, Geography and Science.

A wide range of cross-curricular Special School Days for Key Stage 1, 2 & 3 pupils are held throughout the year. These fit in with National Curriculum requirements and QCA schemes of work. For older pupils the Museum offers a wide range of specialist talks, more details of these are available upon request.

Dover Museum has four galleries and an education room, which can be used for preparation and follow up work, storage for coats and bags and for eating lunch. There is a well stocked gift shop with a wide range of pocket money priced items including many with a historical theme and a range of resources, books and posters suitable for classroom use. There is a coach drop off point just around the corner from the museum where groups can be safely dropped off and collected.

Archaeology Gallery

This gallery concentrates on Dover during the Roman and Anglo- Saxon periods and features models, information panels and a wide range of real Roman and Anglo-Saxon artefacts.

Temporary Exhibition Gallery

This gallery has the exhibition ‘Changing Rooms’ running until 7th September 2008. This exhibition features room sets through history including Roman. Anglo-Saxon, Middle Ages, Stuart, Victorian, W.W.2 & 1950’s. A photocopiable teacher’s resource pack containing teacher’s information, general information about houses through the ages, pictures and pupil’s worksheets is available from the museum at a cost of £5.00.

History Gallery

This gallery concentrates on Dover’s history from 1066 to the present day and features six large-scale models of Dover from 1450 to the present day. Included in this gallery are artefacts from the Tudor, Victorian and W.W.2 periods.

The Dover Bronze Age Boat Gallery

This award winning gallery is one of the finest archaeological galleries in the country and home to the world’s oldest known sea-going boat. This hands-on gallery uses artefacts, replicas, models, illustrated panels, computer interactives, microscopes and hands-on exhibits to bring the Bronze Age to life. A photocopiable teacher’s resource pack containing detailed information and worksheets on the Dover Bronze Age Boat and life in the Bronze Age is available from the museum at a cost of £3.00.

Schools Services

Many of the displays in Dover Museum are relevant to the National Curriculum. In particular we can offer material on:

A range of talks and guided tours of selected aspects of the museum are also available for schools as part of a general visist to the museum. Please contact the Education Officer to discuss your specific requirements. We are very happy to help you plan your visit to the museum and will discuss with you the specific requirements of your group. Teachers are very welcome to make their own free Familiarisation visit to the museum at any time.
