The Deal Man
Carved Celtic Votive Figure

Deal ManA 7" (18cm) high carved chalk figurine found in 1987 by the Dover Archaeological Group at excavations at St. Richards Rd., Upper Deal (Mill Hill). Celtic Iron Age in style, the figure was found in a chamber at the bottom of a 2.5 metre deep shaft, probably fallen from a niche in the wall above where it lay. It seems to date to the Romano-British period (the shaft was filled with early Roman debris including pottery shards from late 1st/early 2nd centuries AD).

On display at Dover Museum from 1991
