Parking Arrangements -
What you need to know about Parking

From January 2001, Dover District Council took over responsibility for the enforcement of parking regulations in roads across the district, with the exception of the A2, A20 and the dual carriageway section of the A256. On these roads, parking enforcement remains the responsibility of the Police, who will also continue to be responsible for all nonparking related traffic offences on the district's roads. A team of 12 Council Parking Attendants are on patrol 7 davs a week enforcing regulations relating to vellow lines, limited waiting areas, residents' parking areas, bus stops and coach bays, taxi ranks, school entrance markings and disabled persons' parking, bays. The new scheme encourages drivers to make sure their vehicle is correctly parked and improves traffic flow and road safety. The income generated is used for enforcement and to improve parking facilities in the district, including the introduction of a number of residents' parking schemes in Dover, Deal and Sandwich.

What you need to know...

  • Single yellow lines mean no parking, generally Monday to Saturday between 8.30am and 5.30pm, (you should check the signs for local variations).
  • Where there are double yellow lines, drivers are not permitted to park at any time.
  • In areas where limited waiting is allowed, drivers should check the signs to see how long they can park there and the type of vehicle permitted to park.
  • Drivers must not park or stop in town centre bus stop bays, taxi ranks or on school entrance markings during term time.
  • Able bodied drivers are not allowed to park in disabled parking bays unless they are accompanied by a disabled passenger and display the appropriate blue badge. Vehicles displaying a valid badge may park on yellow lines (but not if loading is prohibited which is shown by two yellow blip markings on the kerb) for a maximum of 3 hours provided no obstruction is caused.
  • Drivers who fail to park correctly will be issued with a penalty charge notice. The penalty will be £60 which is reduced to £30 if payment is made within 14 days.
  • Drivers who feel they have been issued a penalty charge notice unfairly, can appeal to the Council, if this is rejected they can then appeal to NationaI Parking Adjudication Service. Details of this service are available at www.parking-appeals.gov.uk
