Dover Port Health Authority

Ship Sanitation Certificates (Previously Deratting)

The Public Health (Ships) (Amendment) (England) Regulations 2007 came into force on 15th June 2007. These regulations implement the requirement of the International Health Regulations 2005 and as a result, the former Deratting Certificate will be replaced by Ship Sanitation Control Exemption Certificate/Ship Sanitation Control Certificate with immediate effect. Dover Port Health Authority has been authorised to issue these certificates.

The new certificate will involve a more detailed inspection, which will include checks for vectors of illness and controls in place to minimise the risk of the spread of any illness. If the inspection reveals no evidence of a risk to public health, a Ship Sanitation Control Exemption Certificate will be issued which will be valid for 6 months.

The inspections will take longer than before and new fees as listed below will come into force on 1 January 2008 in line with national recommendations from the Association of Port Health Authorities

Gross Tonnage Charge (£)
Up to 3,000 £100
3,001 to 10,000 £150
10,001 to 20,000 £200
20,001 to 30,000 £230
Over 30,000 £300

With the exception of:

Vessels with the capacity to carry between 50 and 1000 persons - £300
Vessels with the capacity to carry more than 1000 persons - £500

Extra charges may be added for exceptional costs.

Requests for inspection should be made to Dover Port Health Authority by phone on 01304 872216 or by e-mail to porthealth@dover.gov.uk.
