Green Infrastructure
The Dover District Core Strategy was adopted
in February 2010. It includes policy CP7 regarding Green
Infrastructure (GI), which is supported by Figures 2.5 and 3.6
illustrating the existing network and the concept of future
improvements. Please see pages 61 to 63 of the adopted Core
Strategy for additional information. The text box immediately below
Policy CP7 sets out the Council's commitment to developing a GI
Strategy and Action Plan, in liaison with adjacent District
Councils, to support the forthcoming Site Allocations Development
Plan Document and masterplanning for major development sites.
It also highlights the specific issue of further investigating the
Core Strategy's likely effects on the Natura 2000 network and
identifying suitable approaches towards mitigation.
The Council has taken the lead role in
developing GI in East Kent and has organised a Steering Group of
the District Councils (Canterbury, Dover, Shepway and Thanet),
Natural England and Kent County Council to ensure consistency and
compatibility of approach in developing individual District GI
Networks and an East Kent Network which can link with the related
work in Kent Thames Gateway and Ashford.
The East Kent District Authorities are also
working in partnership with Kent County Council, the East Kent LSP,
Environment Agency and Natural England on the Natural Economy East
Kent initiative. This seeks to promote East Kent’s green
infrastructure and natural visitor economy and thereby assist
economic regeneration and improved social well-being. This
initiative is still evolving and the Council is keen to ensure that
the GI Strategy and Action Plan both takes full account of the
initiative and helps shape its future work in the District. The
paper below sets out the key stages in delivering the East Kent GI
(EKGI) Framework.
