Facts about Dover District
Population
Based on the 2001 Census the population of the District is
104,566. The population of the Dover urban area is 32,598 and that
of Deal is 28,768. The area of the District is 31,892 hectares
(78,805 acres or 123 square miles).
Housing
At the 2001 Census, there were 46,260 dwellings in the District;
72% of them owner occupied, 11% managed by the Council, 10% rented
privately and 4% housing association stock. For the period
1993-8, housing completions have averaged 274 per
year.
Employment
Census information shows that there are 47,653 economically
active people in the District. Of these, 39% of people are in full
time employment, 13% in part time and 8% are self employed.
Employment in the District is essentially dependent upon service
industries, particularly those related to transport and
distribution.At the time of the Census, around 10% were employed in
manufacturing, 7% in construction, 16% in transport, 14% in retail
and 53% in agriculture, health work, education and other
services.
Unemployment
In December 2003, the resident based unemployment rate for the
District was 2.3%, compared to 1.9% for Kent and 2.9% for Great
Britain as a whole. In recognition of the economic difficulties
caused by the closure of the East Kent Coalfield and the effect of
the Channel Tunnel on the Port of Dover the District has Assisted
Area status and much of the rural area is a Rural Development
Area.
