Street & House Naming & Numbering

The District Council is the addressing authority and is responsible for the naming and numbering of streets and properties.  Royal Mail is the postcode authority and we refer to them for the allocation of postcodes.  It is essential that we are informed of any new builds so that we can allocate addresses and register them at an early stage.  Royal Mail, the Land Registry, Ordnance Survey, emergency services, utilities and various sections within the Council will be informed and the National Land and Property Gazetteer updated.

Large Developments involving one or more new streets

Please write in (letter or email) at an early stage with proposals for street names which should ideally have strong local connections and be sufficiently unique to avoid confusion with any other neighbouring street, attaching a copy of the site plan. Once consultation has taken place and approval given for the new street name, addresses will be allocated and Royal Mail will be contacted for the postcode(s). We will then officially register these addresses.

Small Developments

Please write in (letter or email) at an early stage, attaching a copy of the site plan so that the new property can be given a suitable official address.  If the development is within a numbered street, then any new property will also be numbered.  If the development is within a street of only named properties, then any suggestions of names will be checked for suitability/duplication.  Once agreed, we will then officially register these addresses.

Addition or Change of House Name

If you would like to add a name to or change the name of your property, please write in (letter or email) giving details of the proposed change. Any suggestion of names will be checked for suitability/duplication. Please note: where a property has a number, the name does not form part of the official address and will simply be in addition to the number.
