COVID-19: support for businesses who pay business rates

The Chancellor has set out a package to support businesses who pay business rates through the period of disruption caused by COVID-19.

Grants for businesses in receipt of small business rate relief, rural rate relief or retail discount

The government has announced cash grants for businesses in receipt of small business rate relief, retail discount or rural rate relief. Find out more about the cash grants

We understand that there will be some new measures announced shortly to provide discretionary financial assistance to those businesses that don't currently qualify for help from the two current grant schemes. As soon as we have any more information on this, we will publish it here.

Businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors

Businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors will pay no business rates for the financial year 2020-21, regardless of their rateable value.

Following guidance published by the government, we have sent new business rates bills to all businesses we have identified that qualify for the retail discount. If you have not received a new bill and think you should receive a retail discount, please contact the Business Rates Team.

Childcare providers

To support nurseries during this time, the Chancellor has decided that providers of childcare will pay no business rates for 2020-21.

We have sent new business rates bills to all businesses we have identified that qualify for the nursery discount. If you have not received a new bill and think you should receive a nursery discount, please contact the Business Rates Team.
