Infectious Disease

We are primarily concerned with the prevention and control of infectious disease. Globalisation has resulted in greater travel opportunities, which in turn has increased the spread of infectious disease. Therefore it is extremely important that early signs of infectious disease are identified and acted on. We work closely with the Health Protection Agency to combat infectious disease and offer detailed advice and guidance on its prevention, spread and re-infection.

We operate an out of hours duty officer system so that we can be notified of infectious disease and respond quickly.

The Master of vessels from foreign ports must notify us as soon as they are aware of an infectious disease and/or death on board a vessel in advance of landing. A team of highly trained medics are on hand to respond to any reported cases of infectious disease.

Further information on infectious disease can be found by visiting the Public Health England website at Public Health England - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
