What is Self Build and Custom House Building

Self-build and custom housebuilding is housing developed and built by an individual, a group of individuals or someone working on behalf of a group or an individual, for their own use either by building the home themselves or working with builders. Off-plan housing or homes purchased at the plan stage prior to construction and without input from the buyer into the design and layout are not considered to meet the government definition of self-build and custom housing. For more information on self-build and custom build please visit the government website or take part in training and knowledge building sessions

Self-build

Self-build projects are defined as those where someone or a group of people directly organises the design and construction of their homes. 

Custom housebuilding

Custom housebuilding is where you work with a developer as an individual or a group to help deliver your own home. The developer may help to find a plot of land, manage the construction and arrange the finance for you new home.

The Self-Build Register in the Dover District
