Addressing Community Support - Get Involved In New Later Life Address Book

Following the success of our Later Life Address Book last year, Dover District Council is launching a second edition of our popular directory, which includes details of ‘dementia friendly’ organisations in the area - and once again, local businesses and community organisations are being asked to get involved.

The directory was launched to help combat issues faced by people living with dementia. It contains a range of useful information, with details of local businesses and organisations that have come forward as ‘Dementia Friends’.

Over 1,000 copies of the book were sent to residential homes, doctors’ surgeries, libraries and members of the community last year, and it was available on the DDC website. This year we are looking to repeat this success, with over 1,000 copies of the book set to be produced, with funding from the Community Safety Partnership.

If you would like your organisation, business or services to be featured in the 2018 Later Life Address Book, at least one member of staff must have attended a free 45 minute dementia friendly information session.

We will be hosting three sessions in February at the DDC offices in Whitfield:

  • Monday 12 February, 10am to 11am
  • Wednesday 14 February, 2pm to 3pm
  • Friday 16 February, 6pm to 7pm.

If you would like to attend one of these sessions, please register. Or if you are already Dementia Friends, and would like to be included in the book, please contact us at community@dover.gov.uk

This local initiative is being run by DDC working with Dementia Friends, part of the Alzheimer’s Society. For more information on the Later Life Project at DDC, please see the Later Life pages.

Notes to editors

According to Alzheimer’s Research UK, 1 in 3 people born in the UK this year will develop Dementia in their lifetime and 38% of the UK population know a family member or close friend living with Dementia.

By becoming a Dementia Friend, you will learn a little bit more about what it’s like to live with Dementia and then turn that understanding into actions, tackling isolation, fear and stigma.

For more information on Dementia Friends, please see the Dementia Friends website.
