DDC Reinstates Historic Mill Wall Benches in Sandwich

Millwall Benches - Sandwich

Dover District Council has reinstated two benches on the banks of the Mill Wall pathway, opposite Sandwich Bowling Club.  The Mill Wall pathway follows the footprint of part of the Old Town Walls in Sandwich which are designated a scheduled monument.  The works were carried out in consultation with Historic England.

There were originally believed to be four benches on the banks of the Mill Wall, accessed by two sets of concrete steps.  Local contractor, Hipperson, undertook the works, recreating the original design and using FSC certified Iroko hardwood.

Cllr Trevor Bartlett, Cabinet Member for Corporate Property, said: “The path of the former Old Town Walls, including Mill Wall, Bulwarks, Ropewalk and The Butts are a popular local amenity for residents and visitors alike to explore the town’s rich history and environment.

“Walkers can now enjoy a rest on the reinstated Mill Wall benches and enjoy the bowling on the green!”

Cllr MJ Holloway, Ward Councillor for Sandwich and Cabinet Member Holder for Tourism said: "A number of residents contacted me about the dilapidated state of the previous benches so I asked DDC to upgrade them given the beautiful view from this location of the bowling green and the iconic setting of St Clement's in the background.

"The town wall walk around Sandwich is a huge asset and DDC is looking to harness its tourism potential - this is a step in that direction and it's terrific DDC was able to find the funds for this small but significant improvement."
