Dover District Council Secures Public Ownership of Building and Land at Sandwich Quay

Dover District Council has been successful today in regaining public ownership of land and property, adjacent to the Slipway at the Quay in Sandwich known as the Sandwich Historic Boatyard.

The Council paid £87,515 to secure the surrender of the lease of the land, which  included all property on the site, and also the removal of the boat which had been moored adjacent to the property on the Quay by the tenant.

Dover District Council is now working to prepare the building for occupancy, including installing an electricity supply, removing the existing fencing around the site and arranging for the grass to be mowed.

Cllr Trevor Bartlett, Cabinet Member for Property Management, said: “By returning the site to public ownership we can now work with the community to realise the full potential of the building to enhance the town’s tourism offer.”

Discussions on the future use of the site are already underway with a number of local community groups.  Dover District Council is confident of leasing the building to enable a community project to be implemented with the future rental income enabling the costs to be recovered. Proposals for the future use of the site will be presented to Dover District Council’s Cabinet for decision in due course.
