Cllr Sue Chandler, Chairman of the Council, joined volunteers and participants to officially launch a new parkrun

The first 5k parkrun in the district for people of all ages is now up - and running - thanks to a £3,000 investment from Dover District Council's Parks & Open Spaces department.  The new Walmer & Deal Seafront parkrun takes place every Saturday at 9am starting from Walmer Green, close to Borrow Pitt car park.  The event is free to enter but new participants must first register online at www.parkrun.org.uk/register

The Chairman of Dover District Council, Cllr Sue Chandler, joined volunteers, runners and walkers in Walmer for an official launch last Saturday (13 October). The first Walmer & Deal Seafront parkrun took place on Saturday 15 September with 248 participants and 28 volunteers.

The campaign to set up the Walmer & Deal Seafront parkrun was spearheaded by local volunteer, Kerry Drew, who is now joined each week by an army of volunteers to help coordinate the event. Walmer Parish Council has also provided funding towards a defibrillator.

Cllr Sue Chandler, said: “I was delighted to officially launch the Walmer & Deal Seafront parkrun which we hope will encourage even more participants of all ages to become more active.  Remember you don’t have to run, walkers are welcome too!”

There are already well established junior parkruns in the district for 4-14 year olds at Betteshanger Junior parkrun at Betteshanger Country Park and the Dover Junior parkrun at Kearsney Abbey every Sunday at 9am.

There are 568 5k parkruns and 250 2k junior parkruns across the UK, with more than 1.8 million people taking part as walkers, runners and volunteers.
