Cllr Mike Conolly Appointed Chairman of Dover District Council

Cllr Mike Conolly was appointed as the new Chairman of Dover District Council at the Annual Meeting on 17 May 2019.  As well as presiding over meetings of full Council, the Chairman is also the civic head of the Council representing the authority at civic and community events throughout the year.  As the First Citizen of the District, the Chairman of the Council takes precedence over the district’s Town Mayors.

Cllr Conolly has been a member of the Council since 2008 and has served as a Cabinet member since 2011 with responsibility for the finance portfolio, and as Deputy Leader of the Council from 2015-2019.   Cllr Conolly was returned as the Member for the Little Stour and Ashstone Ward at the local elections on 2 May 2019.

Speaking on his appointment, Cllr Conolly, said: “It’s a great honour to serve as Chairman of the Council and I am very much looking forward to representing the District and meeting a wide spectrum of people and organisations at civic and community events throughout the year.”

Cllr Conolly’s first official engagement as Chairman of the Council was to welcome the Belgian Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Rudolf Huygelen, who paid an official visit to Dover on 20 May.
