Sir Hugh Robertson KCMG DL, the Chairman of the British Olympic Association and a Deputy Lieutenant of Kent, has unveiled a plaque to celebrate the official opening of the new £26m Dover District Leisure Centre.
Local sports teams, schools and community health organisations were represented at the event held today (Monday, 4 March) along with Charles Johnston, Executive Director of Property for Sport England; John Oxley, Chief Operating Officer for Places Leisure, and; Adam Harding, Regional Director for BAM Construction.
Cllr Keith Morris, Leader of Dover District Council, said: “We’re delighted Sir Hugh is joining us to celebrate the opening of the Dover District Leisure Centre. With state-of-the-art facilities, including a county standard 8-lane short course championships swimming pool, the new centre raises the bar for leisure facilities in the county.”
The Dover District Leisure Centre was opened to the public on Monday, 25 February. Emily-Rose Evans (11) a member of the Dover Lifeguard Club and Kent County Junior 50m Butterfly Champion cut the ribbon to open the centre, accompanied by school PE teacher, coach and community volunteer, Gloria Riley, and the Chairman of Dover District Council, Cllr Sue Chandler.
Sir Hugh met members of the project team and representatives of local sports teams and community groups at the event on Monday, 4 March before taking a tour of the new leisure centre which includes a competition standard swimming pool with seating for 250 spectators; learner pool with moveable floor; sauna and steam room; sports hall; 120-station gym and fitness suite; aerobic studios, spin studio, multi-purpose studio, glass-backed squash courts; outdoor, floodlit five-a-side 3G pitches; and a Clip ‘n Climb interactive climbing arena.
