Request
I would kindly ask your local authority to provide any policies or procedures currently in place regarding special leave, discretionary leave, carers leave, or any equivalent provisions. Specifically, I am interested in policies that address situations where employees need to take emergency time off to care for a dependent adult or child.
Response
The Council’s Care Leavers Policy is attached. The Council has no other policies as outlined in your request but the Employee Handbook does cover these points and extracts are set out below.
Unpaid Leave
The Council recognises that there will be times when you may need to take a leave of absence from work, which is not covered by the annual leave, flexi time, parental leave or sick pay schemes. In these circumstances, it may be possible for you to take a period of unpaid leave from work.
Special Leave
Directors or Heads of Service may grant up to a maximum of five working days (pro rata) paid leave and up to 30 working days (pro rata) unpaid leave of absence in any one leave year for you to deal with unexpected or sudden emergencies. As an example, this may include time off to deal with bereavement or the serious illness of a dependent and the time granted may be as follows:
- Husband, wife, partner or child 5 days
- Mother, father, sister or brother (including in-laws) 2-3 days
- Grandparent, aunt or uncle 1-2 days
Time off for Family Emergencies
In the event of a family emergency which could not have been planned for and which is not covered by the special leave policy, you are entitled to immediate unpaid time off.
