Request
I require please the information regarding waste collections, the procedures given to those the contractor and that of the residents.
Request clarified as: In order for a second bin to be added to collection I would like to see where it states if you are in a household of 6+ you are required to provide names and dates of birth for every member of the household.
Also where it states you can not have a bin of larger capacity whereas there are certain areas in Dover that have this available to them.
Response
The Council’s waste collection service follows national guidelines that a typical 3-bedroom/5-person property be able to store the equivalent of 240L of waste material per week. Reflecting (ever increasing) legal requirements to separately collect recyclable materials DDC attributes the following permitted capacities per 3-bedroom/5-person property:
- 180L (max) approved general, household wastes
- 240L (min) Dry Mixed Recyclables (plastics, cans, glass)
- 55L (min) Paper and Card
- 23L (min) Food Waste
The Council collects the above materials via the widely adopted “alternate weekly collection” regime, whereby general waste and food waste is collected one week, and the recyclable materials and food waste are collected the next. This provides a total waste storage and collection capacity of 521L per fortnight, and prioritises the collection of recyclable material, the correct sorting of which significantly diminishes the requirement for general waste capacity. (Research shows household waste typically contains 60%-70% recyclable/organic material that could/should be placed in the appropriate container for recycling.)
There is no limit to the number of recyclables containers that a resident wishes to purchase and use, however, general waste capacity is limited to 180L per fortnight, per 3-bed/5-person property. Properties with more bedrooms, or more permanent residents, than that are able to apply for additional general waste capacity, which would be granted in accordance with that same metric.
