Biography

Councillor Mike Conolly was first elected as Chairman of the Council on 17 May 2019 and re-elected at the Annual Council Meeting in 2020, 2021 and 2022.  He represents the Ward of Little Stour and Ashstone, a rural ward which covers six parishes (Ash, Goodnestone & Chillenden, Preston, Staple, Stourmouth and Wingham). 

Career

Mike was born and raised in South London and educated at Dulwich College and Cambridge, where he took a Languages degree.  Much of his working life was spent in the retail food trade, where he held senior posts in Trading, Marketing and Customer Relations.  In 2002 he moved to Dover District to take up a commercial position at Kent College, Canterbury.  He retired from this in 2008, the same year in which he was first elected as a councillor.   

During his time as a councillor he has served on the Scrutiny and Governance Committees and various external bodies.  In 2011 he was appointed to the Cabinet with the Portfolio for Corporate Resources and Performance, and he became Deputy Leader in 2015.   

Family

Mike is married to Lynne and lives in Wingham Well.  They have two adult children. 

Interests: Mike is an active member of St Mary's Church, Wingham and Lynne chairs the fundraising Friends of St Mary’s.   From 2007 to 2021 Mike and Lynne were Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal Organisers for Ash, Wingham and Preston. 

Mike enjoys almost every kind of sport, including playing Bat and Trap for his local pub.  Other interests include wine tasting and walking their dog.
