Chairman of the Council, Councillor Gordon Cowan

 

 Biography

Councillor Gordon Cowan was elected Chairman of the Council on 17 May 2023.  He represents the Ward of St Radigunds. 

Gordon is very proud to be elected as the Chairman of the Council and will serve both the Council and the Community to the full.

Career: 

Gordon has been in local politics for the last 30 years, serving at all levels of local government, so has an enormous amount of experience.

Gordon has lived in the district for over 48 years and was a former soldier as a Sapper with the Royal Engineers.

Gordon has been The Right Worshipful Town Mayor of Dover on two occasions, first in the Millennium year 2000/2001, a year when Queen Elizabeth The Queen  Mother was the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and it was also her 100th Birthday.  Gordon was very proud when he  and his wife were invited to London to celebrate The Queen Mother’s official Birthday and also to meet her on the Town Hall steps in Dover to present her with a watercolour painting on behalf of the people of Dover.

The second time Gordon was Mayor of Dover was from 2019 to 2023, and earlier this year Gordon was made a Baron of the Cinque Ports, along with the other Mayors of the Confederation, and was invited to Westminster Abbey for the service of the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla.        

Family:          

Gordon is married to Jeannette and has two sons and six grandchildren. Since 2006, Gordon and Jeannette have fostered children and have been very proud to see the children grow in confidence due to having stability in their lives.
