Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust has been given a welcome boost to support its important work for the environment, after receiving a Green Energy Grant from Dover District Council.

The Trust has been awarded £1,791 to help pay for new roof insulation in the Observatory’s field centre, to help them reduce carbon emissions and energy costs for the future.

As an accredited bird observatory and registered charity, SBBOT is committed to the conservation and recording of the natural environment in the Sandwich Bay area, and offers a range of opportunities for education, training and research.

Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory is run by two members of staff plus dozens of volunteers who work to maintain a centre of excellence for the study of flora and fauna and habitat management. They are part of a nationwide network of observatories that provide crucial daily census information monitoring bird population and bird migratory trends, both of which can be indicators of on-going climate change.

DDC continues to work hard to help tackle climate change. DDC aims to become a net zero carbon emitter by 2030 at the latest and aspires for the district to be carbon neutral by 2050.

Small businesses (up to 50 employees) in the Dover district can apply for a Green Energy Grant for up to 50% of their costs, up to £10,000. The aim of the grant is to help small businesses save carbon and become more energy efficient.

Russell Thompson from SBBOT said: “We are delighted to welcome this grant from Dover District Council for new roof insulation, to help us save energy and money for the future.  We’d like to say a big thank you to Dover District Council for this support.”

Cllr Chris Vinson, DDC Cabinet Member for Climate Change said: “We are very pleased to be able to help the bird observatory to reduce their carbon footprint, and to help support the important work they do monitoring and tracking trends that can help scientists study the effects of climate change for the future.”
